In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.โs legacy of service, justice, and collective responsibility, Duke came together for a campus-wide MLK Jr. Day of Service.
Student-athletes, staff, and community partners gathered for the MLK Unity Rally at Cameron Indoor Gymnasium โ a moment of reflection centered on Dr. Kingโs message of unity, civic engagement, and giving back. Immediately following the rally, volunteers moved to Wilson Gymnasium to take action through The Backpack Project, packing hundreds of backpacks filled with winter essentials and school supplies for local students in Durham.
Beyond backpack packing, participants also wrote notes of encouragement for recipients and experienced a live mural painting by contemporary African-American artist and educator Eugene Vango, reinforcing the power of creativity, community, and care.
This day was a reminder that service is not a moment, but a shared responsibility.
