Adding slip to make a Nautilus Bowl.
Slip is liquid clay, which I make from dried clay trimming and add oxides to colour black. When it dries, it becomes solid clay, which gives the bowl a 3D pattern. This then redirects the flowing glazes during the firing to produce a pattern that's unique to each bowl.
People always think that the pattern would make it impossible to clean, but most of the height variation is smoothed out by the glaze flowing to fill the low points. The final surface is glossy and has a slight texture, but nothing more than that!
