This is one of my oldest designs, and it's still one of my favourites.
The technique itself is incredibly simple. The first time I did it was accidental, I was trying to get a different pattern but had the wheel going too fast, but it's equally easy to get wrong when you're aiming for this result!
I always suggest starting with the wheel turning slower. The faster it's going, the less time you have to think about your hand speed before it's already too late. And there's no real way to save a piece once you've started at the wrong speed.
