Cats Costumery | Making a Historical Elsa cosplay from Frozen 2 | Victorian teagown part 2 @CatsCostumery | Uploaded October 2020 | Updated October 2024, 45 minutes ago.
Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
Part 1 is here: youtube.com/watch?v=u3FwBVqUWMw
This project was suggested by a few Costubers and inspired by some designs (instagram.com/p/B-1SWJ3gJ3M/) by gebruerstine on Instagram. I picked Elsa's nightgown from the Into the Unknown sequence. There wasn't a design already made for this, so I made my own based on a combination of 1890s teagowns and the nightgown itself. I found it challenging to negotiate the modern/cosplay aspect while trying to keep the 1890s look. Although my materials are not historically accurate, I used a lot of historical techniques to keep the historical silhouette (to be clear, this isn't historically accurate at all! but I do think it works well with what we have seen of extant 1890s teagowns).
The teagown is made of two elements, the under dress and the overgown (commonly sounding like overground in this video lol). In most extant tea gowns I've seen, these were usually combined into one garment (and also in the pattern I am using). But I had to heavily alter the neckline of the overgown to which point adding a plastron front was a bit of a headache so I decided to make them separate. As I mention in the video, the construction of this was a bit all over the place. I think at some point I was just slapping things together and making sure there were no raw edges.
In terms of the pattern, it was very simple to construct, but it did take me a while to figure out the combination of vague directions and the scarce pattern markings. I wouldn't say this is very beginner friendly at all. However, I do love the result! I only show a sneak peak here because there is nowhere in my flat where I can get a full length shot, but I'm hoping to do a little costume showcase/feature where you can see it in more detail, and there will be photos on Instagram of course!
