Cats Costumery | Making a Modern 18th century Jacket based on Beauty and the Beast @CatsCostumery | Uploaded September 2020 | Updated October 2024, 36 minutes ago.
Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
I have been plotting this project for years. I really don't know what it was in particular, but when I watched Disney's Beauty and the Beast (2017) I kind of became obsessed with Belle's jackets. Now, I *know* the costumes aren't historically accurate, but they are definitely historically inspired (and that is where I thrive).
There are loads of 18th century jackets that survive in museums today. There are all sorts of different styles, and often jackets were worn as the 'bodices' of the day (with a stomacher underneath or something similar). I show some of my inspirations and research in the video, but my point with this was not to be entirely historically accurate and original practice, but instead I wanted to make a jacket just like Belle's, but with a more 18th century cut. But I also wanted to be able to wear it day to day, as a little Disneybounding does Historybounding.
I'm pretty proud of the fabrics I found for this, although they were super expensive, so I bought very small cuts and had to make it work (18th century style). Much piecing ensued. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It's very comfy and the perfect lightweight summer jacket. There are definitely some pattern alterations I would do. I keep cutting the necklines too wide, which makes these types of clothes fall to a more off shoulder axis, which isn't what I wanted, However, this was a really good practice drill and I have a plan to do another, but quilted!
