If you look around today, you will see the same footwear trends everywhere. One season it is Mary Janes, another season it is sneakerinas, and the same designs appear in magazines, boutiques and mass production.
But shoemaking gives you another option: you can create your own.
Many people learn shoemaking because they cannot find comfortable ready-made shoes. Wide feet, narrow feet and other non-standard measurements can make finding the right footwear extremely difficult.
But you don't need to have a fitting problem to learn shoemaking.
You can simply want your own style.
In this video, I explain why learning the classic footwear types is so important. Ballet shoes, Derbies, Oxfords, boots and other classic constructions give you the foundation. Once you understand their pattern making, construction and assembly, you can start combining and changing these elements to create footwear of your own.
This is the approach I teach throughout my Shoemaker Pro Program, together with my Footwear Design Course and the Pattern Making Hacks lessons included in my 2-year program.
The goal is not to teach you how to copy one particular shoe.
It is to give you enough knowledge and practical shoemaking skills to understand what is possible and how to create it.
Whether you want to make shoes specifically for your feet, develop your own personal style, or eventually create footwear for your own brand, this knowledge gives you the freedom to move beyond what is already available.
