Most people think the most important thing about a shoe last is its shape.
I disagree.
Yes, the shape is incredibly important. In fact, I use mainly one type of shoe last for most of my work. By applying different pattern-making techniques, I can transform that single last into sneakers, Derby shoes, loafers, pumps, boots, sandals, and many other footwear styles. This is exactly the approach I teach throughout my courses because I know most beginners don't have the budget to buy a different last for every shoe they want to make.
But there is another detail that many people completely overlook.
The hinge.
Or even worse—the absence of one.
It may seem like a small feature when you're buying a shoe last, but it can make a huge difference when it's time to remove the finished shoe from the last. If the last doesn't open correctly, or doesn't have an opening at all, removing the shoe can become difficult and, in some cases, you may even damage hours of careful work.
This is one of those details you don't think about until you experience it yourself.
That's why, when I choose a shoe last, I don't look only at the toe shape or the heel height. I also pay close attention to the construction of the last itself and whether it is suitable for the type of footwear I want to make.
