Major Scales For Bass - plus "Lean On Me" (Bill Withers)
Another one in my scale series (my goal is to hit at least all the diatonic modes), today we focus on the most famousest of scales, the major scale. In my opinion a combination of basic music theory and applying it to music is the best way to integrate an understanding of scales into your playing, and be able to improvise, jam, and compose more easily.
We'll also apply the major scale to the bass line of "Lean On Me." Classic.
Some bonus tips for practicing scales:
- play them in every key
- try playing them on only one string (ie C major from the 3rd fret of the A string to the 15th fret of the A string)
- improvise with them
- play them behind your head
- play them in multiple octaves
- have fun!
