In this I'm The One Bass Tab + Tutorial we bust the myth that punk rock bass is monotonous and simple! Cheers to Karl Alvarez for a great bass line (and cool midrange-y tone!). This lesson will take you through every part of the song slowed down and isolated, so you can really get the bass part in your ear. I'll also give you some advice on fingering, and analyze some of the harmony for your musical comprehension!
I didn't get around to talking about tone in the video, so let's do it now! If you listen to the Descendents original track, you can hear how the bass tone has a very Jaco-esque punch in the low-midrange, and is distinctly lacking the hi-mid clackiness that a lot of punk and rock bass has. To emulate that tone, I plucked over my bridge pickup, which changes the tone pretty dramatically compared to playing over the neck pickup (which is what I do most of the time). I also rolled my pickup blend slightly towards the bridge pickup, boosted my low mids a little bit.
