I see no reason why every moment of practice cannot be treated as an opportunity for beauty.Practice is not separate from life. (Pretty much what Wayne Shorter said.)We talk about “living in the moment” as if it were something mystical. But it can be as simple as noticing the wind moving through the trees, the sound of birds in the distance, or the quiet freedom of choosing one’s own thoughts.Why should a warm-up be any less alive than that?The very first note of the day — before technique, before goals, before judgment — is already a complete musical event. There is the challenge of playing in tune. The subtle adjustment of air. The act of listening. The blending of sound. The physical sensation of vibration travelling through the instrument and back into the body.All of it is happening now.Life is not a rehearsal. And practice is not preparation for some future moment where the “real” music begins.The music begins with the first note.So even a major scale — something played a thousand times before — can still be fresh, still be fragile, still be beautiful.If we allow it to be.
