Majoie Hajary (1921-2017) was a Dutch-French composer and pianist known for blending Western classical music with Indian musical elements. Born in Paramaribo, Suriname, she pursued her musical education at the Amsterdam Conservatory and later studied composition in Paris under Nadia Boulanger and Louis Aubert. Her marriage to Roland Garros, an Air France director and nephew of the famed aviator, led her to live in various countries, including India, which profoundly influenced her musical style.
In 1967, Hajary released the album "New Sound From India," a pioneering work that transcribed traditional Indian ragas into Western musical notation, a feat rarely accomplished by Western-trained musicians.
