This video is one of two videos which can be used to investigate the shape of the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire. A compass is placed around a wire with approximately 5 amps of current running through it. The compass gives the direction of the net magnetic field which is a vector combination of the earth’s magnetic field and the magnetic field produced by the wire. NWatch the introduction video to learn about the apparatus used in the videos and learn how the compass reading can be used to determine the approximate direction of the magnetic field produced by the wire.
