Mae Powell, a Bay Area based songstress and rainbow entity, presents her debut Karma Chief single 'Rope You In,' off her forthcoming Sophomore album. The dreamy soundscape, intertwined with Mae's stunning vocals, creates a refreshing yet comforting sound in the indie singer-songwriter space. The electric 12 string solo, played by Garrett Barley, runs through a Leslie speaker, adding an ever enchanting and mysterious sonic element.
Writing this track was the beginning of a long emotional journey that inevitably resulted in an entire LP. "I feel grateful for the way writing songs helps me make sense of and process emotions while I'm in the thick of them," Mae says. The tune was recorded and produced by David Parry (Alice Phoebe Lou) on Vancouver Island.
Mae's debut album, "Both Ways Brighter" was released in 2021 and is an homage to love and friendship. You can find her singing jazz, spinning vinyl, or playing her original music with her 5 piece band made up of her very best friends.

Zitronen laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Ghost Funk Orchestra. Bedford was written by Seth Applebaum when he was a high school senior in 2006. Over 15 years later, he decided that they were worth a revisit with fresh ears and a decade and a halfs worth of new musical experiences.

Like a burst of sunshine breaking through, the opening notes arrive on a soft snare beat, a twinkle of keys, and the light, airy flutter of a muted horn completing the picture. The sound sits somewhere between Brenton Wood’s breezy West Coast soul and Alton Ellis’s honeyed reggae sweetness — Quiñones toggling effortlessly between the two worlds in a single song. The lyrics follow a protagonist worn down by a woman who can’t make up her mind, the two forever out of sync, never quite landing on the same page at the same moment. By the second verse, Quiñones lets loose in one of his signature emotional howls — raw and searching, the sound of someone who has hit the bottom and is pleading not to be left there.

The newest track from Kendra Morris, coinciding with the announcement of her board-game-concept album Next, is a pitstop on the game board. The track title Flat Tire accurately describes Kendras creative process. The song expresses me and my maniacal ideas just trying to make my way and a living in the world as an artist, Kendra shares, as well as my stubbornness and refusal to conform, which can sometimes lead to the results not being quite what I want. Sometimes even a disaster or a deflation but never a failure. In the end I just have to laugh at myself and be glad that I even tried in the first place.
The song sonically tips the hat to old reggae from the 60’s. My parents used to go to Jamaica and bring records back from their trips, Kendra explains, ...so I found a love for reggae at a young age. The song started simply with a little backwards guitar strum; the melody quickly came to Kendra. Kendra and [Leroi] Conroy worked together to incorporate doowop and lofi reggae references via the background vocals. They carry the tune in a unique way. I knew that the voices of the guys in my band were exactly what the song needed. I wanted something imperfect and raw and once they were incorporated the song really took shape. The cherry on top was then provided by Ray Jacildo (The Black Keys, Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos) on piano and organ, who keeps the tune moving right along.
So even within the deflations, theres always better luck next time...right? What’s the point if you can’t have a good laugh looking back at it all. Flat Tire is Kendra having a little laugh at herself and then coming up with more ideas.

Flat Tire, the albums announcement track, tips its hat to old reggae from the 60’s. Inspired by the records Kendras parents would bring home from trips to Jamaica, the tune brings you a catchy, bouncy chorus you just cant get out of your head. Flat Tire was recorded with all vintage gear and tracked through a Tascam 388. It also features Ray Jacildo, collaborator of The Black Keys and Yola, on piano and organ.
The B-side of the 45 features a dub remix of Flat Tire by the one & only Paul Cherry. As soon as we recorded Flat Tire, Terry and I agreed immediately that there should be some sort of dub remix… the tune was made for that, Kendra says. Terry threw out Cherrys name and they agreed he was the man for the job. The final product perfectly echoes classic late 60s dub by building from of the basics of the song...stripping the production down further, playing up the reverb and adding echoes, pauses and delays in all the right places.
