When the supply chain from China fails and your store has nearly all made in China goods you can be left with little or no stock to sell. I'm so used to seeing little or no Thomas The Tank toys stock but now I see the problem across nearly all departments in store. Retailers in Australia have had hue problems getting stock to fill empty shelves during the 2020 Pandemic. One shop I know really well has been an anchor store in a local shopping mall for 40 years and I have never seen it stripped out of stock as I have seen in 2020. In Australia business is slowly opening up again but if you can't get stock to sell there is no point having a shop open. Sadly many shops are failing and closing down. The shopping malls have many stores covered in plywood white walls hiding the closed businesses.
The mid year curbside cleanout was also very curious to look over. People are being very careful what they are throwing out. There was very little of reuse or resale value up for grabs. That's also indicating to me how people are reacting to a huge economic turn down. As I always say the rubbish piles speak to me, and at the moment the story is not a good one. The only joy was finding one stunning Dyson vacuum cleaner. Maybe the most strange things to happen again is panic buying and hoarding of toilet paper is happening again across Australia. This second wave of headless chicken purchasing is getting deeper and deeper. Obviously no one here remembers what the Australian Prime minister said about the hoarding of grocery items. The message to stop hoarding did the exact opposite. It seems the savvy businesses know how to trigger the public into a feeling the worse it yet to come.
