The reason for using a compass in a city is if you know your square on the hypotenuse or simply how far you drove in a particular direction, you can compensate be changing direction 90 degrees to where you want to get to!
Plenty of school zones and local zones are 40kmh so calibrated to give an appearance of going faster than the vehicle actually is while a 40kmh speed alarm chimes when the actual speed is 38 kmh.
Tachometer is more for use if I decide to use a bulk engine oil of a grade only similar to the actual, must not overpressure oil pump by exceeding 2/3 of RPM of normal redline value !
