Having not competed at the 1975 Worlds due to Gorshkov's illness and operation (they had to withdraw due to the altitude in Colorado Springs), this was their first major international competition since the previous Europeans and the first not as reigning world champions since 1970. The judges left them in no doubt however that they were back at the top of the tree and heading for the first OGM in Ice Dance the following month.
