In this video from Berklee Online’s Lyric Writing 2 course, course author Erin Chase explains that a refrain is a line that communicates a song’s central idea and often serves as its title. In verse–refrain forms such as AAA, the refrain is embedded within the verse and returns throughout the song. Chase encourages students to look for ideas with strong “title qualities” and to consider placement within a section, choosing between a leading refrain (which opens or answers a question) and a closing refrain (which delivers the emotional payoff). Every major scale is derived from a system of whole and half steps: W (whole), W, H (half), W, W, W, H. In the key of C, those half steps are found between E and F (Mi and Fa in solfège) as well as B and C (Ti and Do in solfège). If we keep this same set of notes, but start on any note other than C, we will get a whole new scale that we could consider relative to the C major scale. For example, if we start on A, we will get an A minor scale, even though it has the same set of notes as C major. But now the order of whole and half steps have changed (it is now W, H, W, W, H, W, W). Therefore we call the A minor the relative minor of C major. So says instructor Ben Camp in this video from the Berklee Online graduate-level course, Songs Unmasked: Techniques and Tips for Songwriting Success. Parity and balance contribute to whether you feel “at rest” and balanced at the end of the section, or if you feel structural tension and imbalance. Parity describes whether a section has an even or odd number of phrases, while balance describes whether the two halves of a section are evenly weighted. For example, if a verse repeats only three times (as opposed to the expected two or four times) it will leave us in a kind of discomfort, yearning for that extra last verse. This is caused by the odd parity. For balance, we can use the example of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Notice how the second half of the phrases are way emptier than their first halves. Reflect on how this balance works as a contrast from one line to next one, but also how it can also be a tool that connects the music to the lyrics!
