The owners of a Lake Lure business said they have received an eviction date amid an ongoing dispute with the town.
Lured Market & Grill said its summary ejectment is set for Sept. 3. A spokesperson for the business said the town, which owns the property, has still not accepted its most recent rent check.
According to Lured Market & Grill, the termination of its lease comes amid a lawsuit between the business and the town of Lake Lure over whether a boathouse became part of the business's premises after police operations moved.
"We never really wanted to fight with the town. We never wanted to have to do this. We love this community, but sometimes when a bully pushes you into the corner, you've got to fight back," owner Paul Brock previously told News 13.
Co-owner Paul Brock said the business had an agreement with police to use the building after the department moved out. Following Helene, Lured Market began using the space to rent kayaks and other gear.
The town, however, says the business does not have the right to use the property.
“We absolutely do not want to leave, we do not want to have our business shut down,” Brock said.
At Wednesday morning’s council meeting, Brock said residents showed up in support of the market.
“It was such an incredible outpouring of support,” Brock said. “Some folks were angry and they expressed that. Some folks told their experiences with Helene and what it meant to have a place to come to.”
Brock said several council members indicated they wanted to work toward a solution. News 13 reached out to town officials for comment but did not hear back.
In an update shared Aug. 27, the business said several town council members expressed interest in finding a solution during an Aug. 26 community meeting.

Lured Market & Grill has operated along US 74A for eight years. After Helene, the business served free meals to thousands of people.
Lake Lure resident Scott Piper spoke at Wednesday’s meeting, calling the market an important piece of the community.
“This market is so incredibly important to the people of this community for so many different reasons,” Piper said. “This is like the social hub of Lake Lure.”
The town of Lake Lure previously provided the following statement to News 13 on Friday, Aug. 21, regarding the lease termination:
The Town of Lake Lure is aware that information and commentary regarding pending litigation with Second Mountain, LLC is circulating publicly. In order to maintain the integrity of the judicial process, the Town does not comment on pending litigation and directs you to the Motion to Dismiss, Answer, and Counterclaim filed on August 5th and are available for review here.
The narrative on pages 1-3 summarizes our position, and Paragraphs 17-21 of the Counterclaim provide further context, as do Paragraphs 4-6. There are also illustrative images starting on Page 14.
