It’s been over 20 years since I first player Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. I was only in my teens at that point in my life, yet somehow, it feels like it was only yesterday. The characters, the music, the theme song, it all seems to familiar, which is saying a lot because I don’t remember what I had for breakfast.
There’s something special about Lunar:SSS that has stayed with me, for a large part of my life, and I can’t quite pinpoint why that is. The game was developed by Game Arts. Yup, the same studio that brought us the Grandia series. If there’s two words that I could use to sum up the Lunar SSS experience, it would be 'charming', and 'timeless'!

Back in 2020, I missed the Yakuza: Like a Dragon train. You can’t play everything, and Like a Dragon unfortunately slipped through the cracks. It wasn’t until last month that I finally picked it up, to see what all the fuss was about, and I am so glad I did, because it was one hell of an experience.
The best part about waiting 3 years to play it, is that I would only have to wait a couple of weeks for its sequel: Infinite Wealth.
For a bit of context. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the 8th title in the Yakuza series, which has recently been rebranded to Like a Dragon. Infinite Wealth is a direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, retaining the core mechanics, and once again, featuring Ichiban as the main character.

Unicorn Overlord is the latest title developed by Japanese Indi studio; Vanillaware, who, only a few years ago, created one of my favorite modern games: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Unicorn Overlord, however, is a lot different. This strategy RPG may have been overshadowed by other powerhouse games released around the same time, but I’ll tell you now, this is NOT one you should miss out on.

If you’ve been playing RPGs over the past decade, chances are that you’ve heard of Nier. I first played the sequel, Nier Automata a few years ago, and it was this masterpiece that grabbed me hook line and sinker. It was one of those games that left me wanting more, so naturally, I started looking high and low for the original Nier (which was harder than I thought).
Eventually, I gave up my search, wishing that a remaster would be announced in the future. In March 2020, my wish was granted. Nier Replicant, ver.1.22474487139 was announced as a remaster of the original game. This remaster has improvements to the visuals and gameplay, extra story content, and is now completely voice acted, and it’s these additions that make Nier Replicant the best way to play the game.

Occasionally, however, JRPGs like to include our favorite characters from completely different games and series. Today, we’re going to look into just that; The Japanese Role Playing Games where characters from other games make guest appearances.

Chained Echoes is a game that I initially had no plans to play. In late 2022, I was busy with a load of other titles, and couldn’t see myself fitting it in. But that was when everybody on the planet wouldn’t stop talking about it, which lead to a serious case of FOMO. Yup, I was not about to miss out on this one, and I am so glad I didn’t, because Chained Echoes, was by far, the surprise packet of the year.
Chained Echoes is inspired, and pays clear tribute to the games we loved in the past, such as Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Xenogears. From the visuals to the combat, to the music, to the story beats, to the mechanics. It’s almost as if this game was specifically tailored to me. And this is what makes Chained Echoes so easy to recommend, to every JRPG fan of the 90s and early 2000s.

Beyond Galaxyland is the perfect example of RPGs not having to be huge in order to be fun, solid experiences. This Sci-Fi, planet hopping RPG was developed by Sam Enright and is a followup to his first title, “The Greater Good” released in 2018.
If you’re after a nostalgic retro, turn-based RPG experience, that does not waste your time, with space travel and a gun wielding guinea pig, then Beyond Galaxyland should not be missed.
