When was Luke/Acts really written? The traditional answer is somewhere between 60 and 85 CE, making it a near-contemporary witness to the life of Jesus and the earliest decades of the church. That dating has been repeated so often it feels like settled fact. It is not. Dr. Daniel B. Glover joins Derek Lambert (MythVision Podcast) to lay out the full case for why the evidence points to a significantly later date for Luke/Acts, and why this conclusion is not a fringe position but the best reading of the available evidence.
The case is cumulative. Luke's dependence on Josephus, whose Antiquities was published around 93-94 CE, sets a hard floor that already pushes past most traditional dates. The theological concerns in Luke/Acts reflect second-century debates, not first-century ones. The portrayal of Paul in Acts contradicts Paul's own letters in ways that suggest the author had no direct access to Paul or his immediate circle. The ecclesiology in Acts, with its structured church hierarchy and emphasis on apostolic succession, fits a community looking backwards and constructing an institutional origin story, not recording events as they happened. And the literary sophistication of Luke/Acts, including its careful construction of a two-volume work designed to present a unified narrative of Christian origins, points to an author working within a developed literary tradition, not a companion jotting down what he witnessed.
If Luke/Acts is a second-century composition, the consequences are enormous. Acts can no longer function as a reliable historical source for the early church. The traditional authorship attribution to Luke the physician, a companion of Paul, collapses. And one of the primary texts used to reconstruct the origins of Christianity turns out to be a theological project written generations after the events it claims to describe.
