Christians claim Jesus fulfilled dozens, sometimes hundreds, of Old Testament prophecies. It is one of the most common arguments for the truth of Christianity. Preachers list them from the pulpit. Apologists build entire presentations around them. Believers treat fulfilled prophecy as the ultimate proof that Jesus is the Messiah.
But what happens when you actually go back to the original Hebrew texts and read them in their own context? What happens when you check whether these passages were ever about a future messiah at all?
Stephen Ford joins Derek Lambert (MythVision Podcast) to walk through the prophecies Christians cite most often and show that almost none of them hold up when examined in their original historical and literary context. Isaiah 7:14 is not about a virgin birth. It is about a child born in Isaiah's own time as a sign to King Ahaz. Psalm 22 is not a prediction of the crucifixion. It is a lament psalm about the suffering of a righteous person. Micah 5:2 is not a prediction that the messiah would be born in Bethlehem. It is about a future ruler coming from the lineage of David's hometown. Passage after passage, what Christians call "prophecy" turns out to be a text ripped from its original context and retrofitted to match the Jesus story after the fact.
The Gospel writers themselves show how this worked. Matthew is the most aggressive, repeatedly using the formula "this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet" and then citing Hebrew Bible passages that were never predictions of anything. The writers searched the scriptures for verses that could be made to fit, and built their narratives around those verses. That is not prophecy fulfillment. That is literary construction.
So what is the one prophecy that actually holds up? You'll have to watch to find out. But we'll tell you this: it is probably not the one you expect.
