Luigi Mangione’s attorney is speaking out after he pleaded guilty in federal court in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Following Friday’s hearing, defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said Mangione has now “accepted full responsibility” for Thompson’s death, but argued her client has been “unfairly treated since the outset.”
Agnifilo pointed to Mangione’s years of debilitating pain following a broken back, saying he believed the healthcare and insurance systems had “failed him and destroyed his life.”
She also criticized the decision to prosecute Mangione in both federal and New York state court, arguing he is being punished twice for the same conduct.
Now that Mangione has entered a federal guilty plea, his attorneys are asking for the remaining state case against him to be dismissed under New York’s double-jeopardy protections.
