Lt. Cmdr. La’Shanda Holmes’ story of perseverance and triumph to become a U.S. Coast Guard pilot and serve as a White House Fellow is truly inspiring. The quality and dedication of our people never ceases to amaze me. Since the founding of the White House Fellow program in 1964, the Coast Guard has placed ten Fellows, but eight in the past ten years—with six of them women! Over the next several weeks, Adm. Karl Schultz will be highlighting Coast Guard women who have served in this highly-competitive and prestigious program. All Coast Guard members are encouraged to apply.

#DYK that every port in the United States is part of our nation’s border?
The U.S. has 361 ports, all of which are critical to the nation’s economic growth and national security. The Marine Transportation System (MTS) – our complex system of ports and waterways – is essential to America’s economic prosperity. It drives $5.4 trillion of economic activity annually, enables strategic mobility, and links America’s consumers, producers, manufacturers, and farmers to domestic and global markets.
Our MTS is also a frontline in safeguarding our homeland. Our 25,000 miles of coastal and inland waterways are a functional extension of our borders that require constant vigilance. Every day, the Coast Guard stands that watch by controlling, securing, and defending America’s ports and waterways.
Whether we’re securing port infrastructure, facilitating supply chains, or coordinating vessel traffic, our stewardship of the MTS propels economic prosperity while strengthening border security.
