The Loyalist Exile became one of the most tragic and overlooked chapters of the American Revolution. As Patriot mobs harassed and oppressed Loyalists across the colonies, many were forced to abandon their homes, families, and parishes to escape violence, imprisonment, or even death. Some Loyalists formed their own militia companies, turning the conflict into a brutal civil war that pitted neighbor against neighbor and father against son.
The British believed that most Americans, especially in the South, remained loyal but were silenced by a radical minority. In early 1776, governors Josiah Martin and William Campbell hoped a show of force would rally these Loyalists. Admiral Parker sailed with 50 ships and 3,000 soldiers, but the plan was poorly coordinated. On February 27, a Loyalist force of mostly Scottish immigrants marched to join the British but was ambushed at Moore’s Creek Bridge. They launched the last known Highland charge with swords drawn and were cut down. Over a thousand Loyalists were captured in the rout, sealing the fate of many who had hoped to remain in America.
