What happens when religious zeal outruns discipline, strategy, and leadership? In this short, we explore the tragic story of the People’s Crusade, the chaotic and disastrous popular movement that marched east before the main armies of the First Crusade. Driven by faith, desperation, and fiery preaching, thousands of peasants, pilgrims, and poorly armed followers set out for Jerusalem—but many never came close.

Led in part by Peter the Hermit, the People’s Crusade was marked from the beginning by disorder, hunger, and violence. As these uncontrolled bands crossed Europe, some turned to looting, while others carried out horrific massacres of Jewish communities in the Rhineland, leaving a dark stain on crusading history. Lacking supplies, discipline, and real military organization, the movement became as dangerous to civilians as it was vulnerable to its enemies.

When the crusaders finally reached Byzantine territory and crossed into Anatolia, their weaknesses were exposed. Facing the experienced Seljuk Turks, the People’s Crusade collapsed in catastrophe, especially at the Battle of Civetot in 1096, where much of the force was destroyed. What began as a wave of religious enthusiasm ended in slaughter and defeat.

This is the story of one of medieval history’s most tragic campaigns—a warning about fanaticism, poor leadership, and mob violence. If you enjoy powerful stories from the Crusades and the turning points of history, subscribe to Epic History for more history shorts.
