This set of variations for orchestra has a certain operatic flare that comes through at various points in the piece. Liebermann took his original two-piano version (Op. 42) and gave it a large-scale orchestral make-over. Variations on a Theme by Mozart (Op. 75), completed in 2001, is based on a selection from the 18th-century master's opera Abduction from the Seraglio. In exploring the tune and riding it in every possible direction, Liebermann takes the listener on a journey that is tragic at one moment and comical in the next.
