Welcome to my 699th solo guitar video on YouTube, “Lover Man” or as it’s known by his full name Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?), a Billie Holiday signature song. This is a completely improvised performance, first and only take. #loverman #billieholiday
An interesting choice this week for several reasons: I actually had nothing prepared to post today because while I was actually preparing a good number of special arrangements over the past couple of months (one that I've been trying to put together is an arrangement for "The Things You See" by Allan Holdsworth. If you know that tune, you know it can take weeks, months or... never. But I will try), I have been traveling a lot and also suffering from some pretty bad back aches within the past several weeks and I just really had no time and frankly, motivation to do much on the guitar. When that happens, and I want to pull something out of nowhere, I will often go to jazzstandards.com which is a little bit of an old-timey website but an excellent resource for anyone wanting to study jazz, especially repertoire wise, there were always be songs there that I haven’t done yet or even know. Lover man was listed quiet at the top and I realized that this tune was probably one of the first three or five Jazz standards I ever learned. The others being a foggy day, little sunflower, all of me and a couple more.
And since I pulled it out, and since I have never really been a lyrics person, I looked up the lyrics and realized just how devastating they are and how they speak to a basic human need and realizing how lucky I am in my own life.
Finally, I had some major work done on my guitar, even though it's nothing that you can actually see in the video, I had the neck and headstock completely reworked, installing EVO gold alloy frets a graphite nut and Graph Tech Ratio locking tuners. He also filed down the fingerboard itself, which was pitted and quite carved out at spots. These tall and big ass frets plus the new strings gave the guitar a completely new tone which I really liked, but wasn’t sure how it will come out in recording.
