One fellow performer told me that the story behind this tune goes as such. Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn had just finished a perfect score for the upcoming production 'Whoopee' starring Eddie Cantor. It was all finished up nice and tidy when Mr. Ziegfeld himself asked that they find something for Ruth Etting to do. They were less than pleased, and decided that yes, they would write a song for Ruth, but it would be one with a crazy range, something they thought nobody could sing... but she showed them all, and made a big hit with the song.
Here's yours truly with the orchestra from a couple of years back at the Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Dallas, TX.
