Love is in the air!
She wasn’t very interested, our red-crowned crane, when first introduced to her new partner last spring. She thought him far too young, only 1.5 years old. He, in turn, was quite skeptical and found her bit scary.
But then in December he move in to the enclosure next to the her. All Christmas they’ve been glancing at each other, flirting through the fence, bowing and dancing to each other. Mid-January, we opened the gate and they finally got to move in together.
As you know, you should never say never, but the likelihood that there will be small crane cubs this spring is not great. He is still young, in the wild red-crowned cranes become sexually mature at the age of three. But we are happy that our cranes have taken a liking to each other - it bodes well for the future.
