Hello, my name is Emma. I am an English teacher. I also have a masters degree in learning languages. Today, I wanted to talk about 10 common myths people have about learning languages. So, first of all, what is a myth? A myth is something people believe might be real or true, but in fact, its not true. So, were going to look at 10 common myths about learning languages people have.
The first myth is you have to be young to learn a language successfully. Many people think only children can truly learn a language. Now, Ive been an English teacher for many, many years. I have had students who were 60 years old, 70 years old, 80 years old, and even one person who was 90 years old. And what I can tell you is that it is possible for adults to successfully learn a language. Children learn languages more easily. So, for example, accents. Its easier for children to hear sounds in a language. They can pick up an accent easier than an adult can in general. But adults can learn a language well with consistent practice. Practice makes perfect. I think the hardest thing for many adults is finding the time to learn a language. If they practice enough and they have a good method for learning a language, adults can learn languages successfully.
So, now lets look at the second myth many people have when it comes to learning languages. If you are learning a language, you must live abroad to learn that language. So, you must live in an English-speaking country in order to learn English. And to become fluent. So, this is not true. Its a myth. You can learn a language in your own country as well. You might need to be more creative to find opportunities to practice, but its possible to learn a language in your own country. Im right now doing that with Mandarin. Im learning how to read and write Mandarin in my own country, Canada, and Ive learned a lot. The nice thing about nowadays is that there are so many online resources. There are so many materials. There are things you can read, watch, practice on. So, because of the internet, it has become a lot easier to learn a language without traveling. So, this is a myth.
The third myth is if youre making a lot of mistakes in a language, youre not good at it. So, for people learning English, they make lots of mistakes, they feel very bad, and they say, Oh, my English is so terrible. This is a myth. Mistakes are how we learn. Its very important in the learning process that you make mistakes. Its also good to remember native speakers of a language make mistakes all the time. They make grammar mistakes, pronunciation mistakes, vocabulary mistakes. So, mistakes are common. The key is when you make a mistake, you learn from it. As long as you are looking for the mistakes you make, and then you figure out the correct way of doing things, and you learn from it, then youre doing the right thing. So, this is a myth. Its important to make mistakes when youre learning a language. Its a part of the process.
The next myth is that you need to memorize a lot of grammar rules first. So, your first step to learning a language is learn the grammar. So, this is a myth. Grammar is important, but communication comes first. So, what I noticed is a long time ago, learning a language was mainly about learning grammar. Students would go to class and spend the whole time practicing grammar. And a lot of these students, they learned the grammar rules, but they could not talk or communicate. To me, I believe that communication is the most important thing. […] TOP 10 MYTHS about Learning English](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xBabA7yATLg/mqdefault.jpg)

Transcript:
Hello. My name is Emma, and today we are going to learn some new expressions for people who are busy. So, if you are a busy person, these expressions are for you. They are very common expressions, and we use them in everyday conversation. So, were going to learn five expressions today. Were going to learn go, go, go. This is one of my favorite expressions in English. Were going to learn in a rush, on the go, swamped, and have a lot on my plate. All of these are very useful expressions for somebody who is busy, or to use to describe a busy person. Oh no, look at the time. We need to get started.
Okay, so this is one of my favorite expressions in English, go, go, go. So, youll notice there is one, two, three, three goes. When we say go, go, go, were talking about doing something very quickly, okay? Always moving, always doing things quickly. So, it describes almost like a lifestyle, or how your day is if youre very busy. So, for example, Im always go, go, go in the mornings. In the mornings, I have to go to work, I have a lot of things to do, Im always in a rush, I have to grab breakfast, I have to take care of my students, I have to do marking. Its always go, go, go in the mornings. This means the mornings are very busy, and Im moving around very quickly doing things. Heres another example. So, in this one, Im go, go, go. I can also describe a day as go, go, go. So, for example, Oh, this weekend is go, go, go. Somebody actually told me that yesterday. They said, This weekend is go, go, go. They had their daughters birthday party, they had to go get a cake for it, then they also had to do a little bit of work and some other - some cleaning and cooking. So, it was a very go, go, day for them. Okay, heres another example. Today has been go, go, go. Today I worked, I cleaned my house, and I went to the doctors office, and then I made this video, so its been very go, go, go today. Today is go, go, go. All right, so thats the first expression I want you to learn, and it should be an easy expression because you probably know the word go, so all you need to do is say it three times, and you have this expression.
Now, lets look at the next expression. In a rush. The meaning is you dont have much time, so you are hurrying. Youre doing things very quickly because youre trying to get somewhere. You are in a rush. So, heres an example. People say this all the time. Oh, Im so sorry. I cant talk right now. Im in a rush. So, this means that they are hurrying, they have something important they need to do, and they cant talk because they dont have time. I just want to point out that we use in a rush with the be verb, so I am in a rush, you are in a rush, she is in a rush, he is in a rush, they are in a rush, and we are in a rush. All right, so lets look at another example. I have a boss. Shes always very busy, and she has so much work to do that shes always in a rush. So, I can say, My boss is always in a rush. She doesnt have time to chat. Shes very busy. Shes in a rush. All right, heres another example sentence. This is common for so many parents who have to pick up their children from work. Shelly is in a rush. Why is Shelly in a rush? Shelly is in a rush. She needs to pick up her son from school after work today. So, Shelly is in a rush. She needs to pick up her son. So, this is a great expression. We use it all the time in everyday English because most people nowadays are in a rush, especially after work.
Lets look at the next example expression. This next word I use all the time. Swamped. And listen very carefully to my pronunciation. Even though its ed, in this word, we pronounce the ed like a t sound. So, I would say, Swamped. Swamped. So, what does it mean to be swamped? It means you have too much work. Youre very busy with work. You have way too much to do. So, I often feel swamped. So, maybe you feel swamped as well. TRANSCRIPT
Hello. My name is Emma, and in todays video I am going to teach you some great writing tips. These tips are for both academic writing and non-academic writing. Okay? So its for writing in general. Now, this video is going to be in two parts, because I have so many tips, so Im going to give five tips in this video and five tips in the next video. Okay, so lets get started.
So, there are so many different ways... Or so many different types of writing we do in our lives; we write emails, we write essays if were a student, we might write a Facebook post, or we might write a resume or a cover letter. So its very important to develop your writing skills because you will be writing throughout your life a lot. So lets look at my first tip.
My first tip is: Its very important to think about the genre of what youre writing. Genre is a very fancy word that pretty much means type. So, a genre of writing might be an essay, or it might be a cover letter, or an email, or a tweet. These are all different genres, and each one of these has a different expectation on what you should include and how you should write it. So its very important, first step is: Know the genre or know the type, and know what is expected of you.
Also important in this is knowing your audience, or thinking about your audience. So, for example, if you write an email, the language youre going to use and the way youre going to write will be different if you write an email to your friend versus an email to your boss. So its important to think about: Who are you writing to? because this is going to help you decide what to write and how to write it. Same with, you know, if you are on Twitter and you write a tweet, or on Facebook a Facebook post, you know, its important to think about your audience. You know, are you writing this post for friends to see, or is this a post your boss might see, or members of the public? You know, and that could be a problem. So its important to think about, especially with this and on other social media, too: Audience. Who will see this and what will they think about it, and what are their expectations? You know, some people work for companies where theyre responsible for social media, so its important, too, the type of wording they use when theyre writing on Facebook. If you work at a company and youre writing for your company, its going to be different than if youre writing for your friends. Same with an essay. An essay has a certain structure, you know, its supposed to be a certain amount of pages, it has a certain organization to it, and so knowing whats expected of you when you write an essay will help you because its going to be very different than, for example, a Facebook post. Same with in business, business reports. Understanding the format of a business report is important if this is something youre going to be writing, and thinking about your audience. Same with executive summaries, which is a type of thing businesspeople write. If youre not in business you might not ever write one of these, but if you are in business you need to realize that audience is important because professionals are going to be reading this, and these people are busy, so, you know, knowing your audience and knowing what is expected of you is the very first step to good writing. Lets look at some other tips.
Okay, so weve talked about genre or the type of writing youre doing, and part of this is knowing the expectations for how long what you write should be. Okay? So you want to know a bit about length expectations before you start writing. This is really important, especially in university where you often have a number of pages youre allowed to write. Its important, you know, in the workplace because sometimes, you know, you cant write a lot. […] My TOP 5 Writing Tips (for all levels)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xu2gm-Y4RXs/mqdefault.jpg)

TRANSCRIPT:
Hello, my name is Emma, and in todays video, we are going to learn some English that is
very important for our social lives.
So were going to learn words like meet, see, and get together, and were going
to learn the differences between these words and how to use them.
Theyre very important words, and we use them a lot in English.
So my first question to you is, which sentence is better?
Every weekend I meet my family, or every weekend I get together with my family?
Both of these sentences are possible, but one is a little bit better than the other.
Okay, so which sentence is better?
Well, theyre both possible, but I would say the second sentence, Every weekend I get
together with my family is the better sentence.
And the reason is because we use get together informally when were talking about social
events, and we usually use meet in formal situations.
So for example, at work I meet with my boss.
This is a formal situation.
I use the word meet.
At work, I meet with clients.
I meet with customers.
These are all formal situations, whereas when Im seeing my friends or my family, its not
formal.
Were having fun.
I can relax.
I can be myself.
So in these cases, when were socializing, we can use get together with.
So the major difference is this meet is usually used for work situations, and get
together is used more for social situations.
Now lets learn a little bit more about these two verbs and how we use them.
Okay, so lets look at some more examples with get together.
Again, we use get together to mean spend time with someone.
Its often when theres a group of people together for an event, like a party or to
hang out.
So how might we use this?
Well, someone might ask you, What did you do last weekend?
You might say, Oh, I got together with my family.
This means you spent time with your family.
Again, we use this a lot in English, so its a really good expression to use.
Notice here I wrote got.
Got is the past tense of get.
And I want to also just show you this word with.
When we use get together, we need to talk about who we got together with.
So youll see this preposition, Who did you get together with?
I got together with my friends.
I got together with other YouTubers.
I got together with my family.
I got together with my co-workers.
So we use the word with after get together.
All right, lets look at another example with get together.
So every Tuesday, I get together with my friends.
So this is - were talking about every Tuesday, were talking about the present tense, so
we can say get instead of got.
Got is for the past, get is for the present, and will get is for the future.
Okay, so what about as a noun?
Well, we can use get together as a noun.
What you will notice is we have the word get, and then we have here this hyphen, and then
we have the word together.
So it has that little hyphen to connect the word when we use it as a noun.
And how do we use it as a noun?
Well, heres an example.
I went to two get-togethers.
This means - this means I went to two events where people were at, they might be parties.
The reason I said two here is because I want to show you get together is a countable
noun.
We can count the number of get-togethers.
So that means that if youre talking about one get-together, you need the article a
or the in front of it.
There is a get-together this weekend.
Do you want to come to the get-together?
And again, it just means an event, usually with friends or family.
So lets look at another example.
At the get-together, I saw Adam, James, Ronnie, Rebecca, and Alex.
It was an engVid get-together.
So get-together is another great word to use when youre talking about your social life.
