I take a look at a very very small splinter under the microscope to see what it actually looks like.
to my surprise that kind of looked like an uprooted tree.
I pulled this splinter out of the finger of my neighbor's 4 year old daughter, the splinter was the tiniest splinter I have ever seen so I just had to put it under the microscope to see what it looked like.
