The Mattel Aquarius has a reputation for weak graphics, and honestly... it earned it.
In this video I take a look at what the Aquarius could and could not do graphically. We start with the famous Running Man demo from the Aquarius Simplified Guide, then move on to a pair of modern homebrew games, Turmoil 2022 and Oh Sh!t Pipes, to see how creative programmers worked around the machine's limitations.
Despite its tiny character set, lack of a true bitmap graphics mode, and very limited hardware, the Aquarius was still capable of some surprisingly interesting visual effects when pushed by determined programmers.
Was the Aquarius really as bad as history remembers, or have we been too hard on Mattel's little computer?
