The book my publisher pitched to me as "like Dickens, only good."

If you're a fan of the Alcott brand of quaintness, this may not be the book for you.
This is a gothic opera featuring secrets, lies, a dashing stinker who may or may not be the devil, and a story so off-brand, Alcott couldn't even get it published under her pen name (apparently in those days, it was okay for fictional women to marry a fictional devil but not to file for fictional divorce).
