The Bureau of Land Management has cancelled a Biden era rule meant to consider conservation in decisions over land use. The "Public Lands Rule," enacted in 2024, required the bureau to base its decisions on scientific data and indigenous knowledge. Under the rule, the BLM had to give preservation of cultural and natural resources, including clean water and wildlife habitat, the same footing as commercial development. The change comes as the Trump administration pushes to expand logging, mining and oil drilling on public lands. The BLM oversees more than 13 million acres of land in New Mexico.
