Of all the locomotives from Great Britain, one of the most well known is William Stanier's Class 5 4-6-0 locomotive, more commonly known as the "Black Five." Stanier was trained at Swindon Works for the Great Western Railway but was confined to the GWR look of having linkages inside the frames and being, thoroughly, Great Western. He eventually left Swindon for Crewe Works with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) where his designing skills could break the GWR mold. The Black 5 has considerable similarities with a GWR 4900 Hall class but are by no means a copy. The 49xx Halls were much wider where the Black 5s are narrower, but their similarities include cylinder arrangement (two outside), internal boiler design and size and 6 foot driving wheels. Great for mixed traffic, these engines are a powerhouse and reliable engine for any English railroad in England, Wales or Scotland. Hope you enjoy!
