Ways that Scotland has changed me:
After moving from the US to Scotland and living there for almost 2 years, I’ve noticed some changes in myself.
1. I don’t wear PJ’s out and about anymore.
Since we’ve moved to Japan, this is something that I think will change again. Before we moved to Scotland I dressed more like this: with ripped, boot-cut jeans, sneakers, and tight tops. Or skinny jeans with knee high boots. I stood out as an American. While the tops didn’t really change, I began wearing skinny jeans with calf high boots instead. I’ve heard these are more popular in California and some other parts of the US, but they weren’t in where I lived. But with this fashion here in Japan, I stand out just as much as I did when I first came to Scotland.
2. I travel more…duh.
When I lived in the US, I travelled in the US a bit. Joe and I honeymooned in Colorado, we vacationed out in California, and did weekend trips around the East Coast, but never even went to Canada. In Europe, however, there were so many opportunities to travel affordably, we couldn’t pass it up and luckily, we both loved it and travelled well together. Thus our decision to continue living abroad and traveling.
3. We mind our queues.
In the US, people were considered rude to cut in lines, but not nearly to the degree that we found in the UK. At an airport in London, I actually heard a woman arguing to another woman that her 5 year old daughter should wait in the queue to go. Meanwhile I was thinking, “She’s a child! She can’t hold it. Just let her cut!”. This started rubbing off on us though to a lesser degree. We began reacting much stronger when we saw line cutters and that was a huge shock to us when we travelled in some other parts of Europe where they didn’t obey this rule.
4. I think kilts are sexy and super cool.

5. I think 70 degrees is hot.
When moving from the US to Scotland, I was nervous about not liking the weather, but I ended up not bothered by it at all. It didn’t rain as much as I anticipated and when it did, the cobblestone streets shown so beautifully in the street lights that I found it romantic rather than annoying for the most part. I noticed, however, when it hit started to hit 16 degree Celsius (which is only about 60degree F), I was walking around in tank tops and saying how hot it was! It’s amazing how quickly the human body acclimates to new surroundings.
6. We pack much lighter for travel.
When we went to Colorado or California, we packed a lot because we always had a car and one steady hotel to stay in. Since the way we travelled has changes (we now backpack and stay in hostels), we pack lighter and smarter.
7. Speech.
After living, studying, and working in Scotland for over a year and a half, I picked up on the language. Suddenly, I was saying, “Cheers” to everyone. When speaking to a Scottish person, I had a bit of the accent to the point where they no longer knew I was American. When video chatting with my family, I would mention my flat or the lift at work without missing a beat. Even when travelling, I was converting things to pounds or quid instead of dollars. Some people have commented that it sounds like I’m trying or that I shouldn’t speak like that at all, but after getting laughed at so many times for speaking so differently and being surrounded by it, it’s normal to adapt to your surroundings. It all became very natural to me.
