I was researching Bananaquits in Tobago and eating a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich when I felt a brush against my shoulder. It was a Trinidad Motmot flying passed me to snag a chunk of my sandwich! Luckily I had my camera with me. ;)
After the first piece of my PB&J I could no longer eat my sandwich and I couldn't get rid of it or leave because I had to sit and observe the Bananaquits. Once the Motmot figured out I wasn't a threat since I didn't yell at him/her, chase him/her away, or swat at him/her they kept coming back for more! At first I was annoyed, but it quickly turned into me being excited that this bird was showing such awesome signs of intelligence and being so close to me.
If I wanted I could have slowly taught him/her to eat from my hand, but I would never want to do that in case once I leave they would continue to try to eat human food. Not only do I not know if that food is suitable for a Motmot, but what if they attempted to eat something from the next tourist and they get hurt for it? :( No bueno.
