Ashley Rose Young, Curator of American History in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, welcomes guests to the division’s America 250 symposium, Our Common Ground: 250 Years of Americans Engaging with Nature. She then introduces the event’s featured performers: Jessica C. White, Kevin Kehrberg, and Jeffrey A. Keith.
Crankies are illustrated scrolls housed in wooden boxes that function as hand-cranked “moving panoramas.” Believed to date back to the eighteenth century, they remain a lively and imaginative medium for sharing folklore, oral histories, and storytelling traditions.
In this special performance, Asheville-based artist Jessica C. White brings several of her works to life alongside musician-scholars Kevin Kehrberg and Jeffrey A. Keith. Together, they journey from Appalachian peaks and the Swannanoa Tunnel to Carolina coastlines, celebrating the playful creatures and storied landscapes in between.
Finally, Stephanie Stillo, Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, concludes the program and invites guests to attend the reception for the event.
