The IRENE system at the Library of Congress uses optical imaging to create a digital file of a record without ever coming into physical contact with the item.
It was recently used by the Library's Preservation Research and Testing Division to scan a 94-year-old disc of an Amelia Earhart speech, a promotional gimmick that was included in copies of her 1932 memoir, "The Fun of It."
