On February 24, 2023, in Herndon, Virginia, Brendan Banfield (a former IRS agent) and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair, carried out a premeditated plot to kill his wife, Christine Banfield, and an innocent stranger, Joseph Ryan.
Joseph Ryan was lured to the home under false pretenses as part of a staged home invasion gone wrong. Brendan Banfield was convicted on February 2, 2026, of two counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm, and child endangerment after a three-week trial. Juliana pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Brendan now faces a mandatory life sentence with no parole. Today’s hearing will also address defense motions to set aside the verdict (his attorney wants him to be acquitted) and will likely included powerful victim impact statements before we see him get LWOP'd.
