Laura Ingalls and her family arrived in DeSmet in 1879. Charles (Pa) was working for the RR and their first residence was that of the surveyor’s house.
In the spring of 1880, Charles and Caroline established a homestead claim a little out of town, and this is where Laura, Mary and Carrie grew up.
At the age of 15, Laura became a teacher and taught in rural schools while still attending studies herself. She met Almanzo Wilder here, they married and homesteaded on the other side of town for several years. Their daughter, Rose was born in 1886 and became a journalist and freelance writer. It was Rose who encouraged her mother to write the Little House books.
The homestead is complete with buildings and animals and although Ma’s house is not the original, it has been built to the exact dimensions on the same spot.
This is a very hands-on place, and great for kids of all ages. You can take wagon rides across the prairies, learn how to make rope, attend an 1880s class and a host of other things.
