To celebrate Franz Liszt's birthday on October 22, we perform portions of Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, Sonata in b minor, Mephisto Waltz and La Campanella, but all transformed into Happy Birthday!

Scott’s notes on the composition:
For the Hungarian Rhapsody portion, I based it on Liszt's original 4-hand version, which is in D minor instead of the C-sharp minor key of the famous solo version.
The B minor Sonata portion uses the transition (including a bit of Happy Birthday!) to and the main part of the D major Grandioso section. I tried to do some surprise modulations as Liszt did in this section.
The Mephisto Waltz portion is a short transformation of the 2nd interlude of the lyrical theme, in E major, based on Liszt's own 4-hand transcription of the piece.
La Campanella features some more freedom in the transcription, but includes the introduction and first statement of the theme, then transitions to the coda.

This composition technique was inspired by professor Emile Naoumoff's assignment during my doctoral studies at Indiana University, where students were asked to apply the harmonies from Bach's C major Prelude to any piece of their choice.
