The Meeks Duo - Piano 4 hands | Send in the Clowns by Stephen Sondheim (Piano 4-hands, live version) @TheMeeksDuo | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 2 minutes ago
In honor of the great American composer Stephen Sondheim, who sadly passed away today, here is our piano duet arrangement of one of his most beloved songs "Send in the Clowns" from the musical "A Little Night Music".
Live performance at Kay Meek Centre, West Vancouver, Canada. September 2021.
On the surface, "Send in the Clowns" is lyrical and romantic, but in the context of the story, there is a deep sadness and feeling of regret in it. The title refers to the theatre expression that implies that even if things are going wrong, we must move on.
The music is mostly in E-flat major and uses straightforward harmonies, but has frequent unexpected pauses and meter changes from 4 beats per bar to 3 beats, perhaps reflecting the character's insecurity. There is a brief bridge section in a minor key (1:40), and the music ends with a return to the main theme, and a gradual decrease in speed in the last few bars.
Sheet music available at musicnotes.com: musicnotes.com/l/jfMMZ.
