I always wonder what Leo Fender was thinking when he designed this instrument? He was thinking about mixing Guitar and Bass as solo performance instrument? Very cool instrument I think. You can play bass while you are playing chord melody as guitar part. So it is really underrated?
The Fender Bass VI is a unique six-string instrument that occupies a middle ground between a guitar and a bass. Originally released in 1961, it is tuned E-to-E, exactly one octave lower than a standard guitar, and features a short 30-inch scale length. Unlike a baritone guitar, which is typically tuned a fourth or fifth lower (B-to-B or A-to-A), the Bass VI is emphatically considered a bass guitar.
