I grew up reading about musicians in magazines. I'd learn about their experiences and try to recreate them for myself. It may have been extreme, but I really believed this was how I could play funk like Earth, Wind & Fire, or jazz like Joe Pass.

Looking back, I think repetition was a very important part of my learning. I would take something I heard and keep going back to it, over and over, until it became part of me.

I didn't always know where these experiences would lead me. I just wanted to be around music and learn from it.

In this conversation, Sammi asks me about my experience and how I made things happen along the way.

Maybe the most important thing is to live with music.

What was your takeaway from this conversation? I’d love to hear what stood out. Your thoughts help us understand what is meaningful to you and what we can talk about next.
