It's the LIRR and to Suggest Otherwise is an affront to God, Nature and the Memory of Joey Buttafuoco.
The New York Times keeps trying to make the “L.I.R.R. vs. LURR” debate happen, and I’m here to say: absolutely not. In reality, the Times merely did a piece of service journalism to help people spot who the non-locals are, and anyone saying “lure/LURR” should be treated as a civic menace.
The Long Island Railroad is pronounced L-I-R-R, and anyone who says otherwise should lose not just the argument, but also accurate transfer information at Jamaica. They are bad people and should not be trusted.
I start out with a pronunciation quibble and then go on a full-on spiel detailing the taxonomy of wrongness, complete with Ronkonkoma slander, SUNY/CUNY inaccuracy, and more.
