Today I’m joined by YouTube guitar gear gurus Leigh Fuge and Jake Leigh to get an introduction to – and dial in some killer presets on – the Line 6 POD Express guitar amp modeler, with a little bit of help from the HX One multi-FX unit!

At 42 Gear Street Six, Jake and I got our first taste of the POD Express, and Leigh – who’s something of an expert on this budget box of wonders – showed us how to make our first sounds and store our own presets.
Despite being a small and startlingly affordable package (it’s around $179/€189), the POD Express has a number of amps, cabs, and effects built in – with tones coming from the more expensive Helix range – plus an array of secondary functions and features to make some surprisingly sophisticated tones.
These are delivered alongside cracking bonus additions like a built-in looper and tuner, so this is really an all-in-one rig for home use, practice, recording and more. (It has a headphones out for silent practice and the POD Express doubles as an audio interface too!) That said, it’s a wonderfully intuitive unit to use, and has clearly been designed so that guitarists of any experience level can get started making music with it straight away.
We began with Jake making himself a nice fat high-gain preset for heavy rock and metal sounds. Next up was Leigh, who wanted to get a raunchy 80s rock tone, and then for me we dialed in a nice ambient indie/alternative sound on a cleaner amp with a big reverb.
What Jake and I learned pretty quickly is that, once you know your way around the unit, you can be cooking up great tones on the POD Express in around five minutes. We then coupled the POD Express with the HX One to add some lush chorus to Jake’s sound… and we were done!
