As 2024 draws to a close, I thought I’d reflect on the one piece of guitar gear I’ve bought this year that I think is an essential purchase for basically every guitarist and bass player out there regardless of where you’re at on your musical journey… it’s the humble IK Multimedia ToneX One!

It might be tiny – and cheap at around $170/€149 – but the ToneX One has made me play guitar more this year than I have in… well, many years.
This partly because there’s loads of amazing (and free!) tones and sounds available in the ToneNet software and on the peal itself that cover any style of music for guitar and bass, but also because I’ve found myself able to use the ToneX One in so many different musical and creative settings.
It’s been my entire amp/cab rig. It’s been an overdrive pedal in an otherwise analogue setup. It’s been an audio interface. A tuner. A silent practice device. And an inspiration machine when I’ve been on vacations and business trips and just wanted to jam out in my hotel room.
You can run the ToneX One on its own – you just need a guitar and lead, a power cable, and headphones, and you’re good – or in so many different studio, live and practice combinations that I always find a place for it in my setup.
That said, though, it would all be for nothing if the sounds weren’t good. Thankfully, they are! The ToneX One has been the first modeling device that has convinced me with its tones AND with its dynamic playing feel.
And all this is why I think this humble and affordable mini pedal is 2024’s most essential piece of guitar gear. And I’ll go ahead and say it may well take this honor in 2025 as well!
