Lindsay Clancy's defense is now trying to reconstruct the months before she killed her three children—and increasingly, the focus is shifting toward her doctors, medications, and what her lawyers portray as a mental-health system that failed her. But even if Clancy was genuinely suffering and experiencing adverse effects from medication, that does not automatically make her legally insane.
In today's show, I walk through the defense's cross-examination of the prosecution's psychological expert. Clancy's lawyer emphasizes that she had previously been a successful nurse, loving wife, devoted mother, and apparently happy woman before her mental health began deteriorating in late 2022. The jury hears about insomnia, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, multiple doctors and medications, suicidal ideation, and medical records documenting anxiety and depression with adverse drug effects. A Rhode Island program specializing in postpartum treatment also evaluated Clancy but concluded her problems were more appropriately treated as general mental-health issues rather than specifically postpartum difficulties.
The defense clearly wants the jury asking whether doctors and medications helped create the catastrophe that followed. I explain why that's emotionally powerful evidence—but also why it doesn't necessarily answer the only question that ultimately matters for the insanity defense: when Clancy killed her children, did she understand what she was doing, and could she control her conduct?
