Gary B. Fields (né Fleischman) passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020, in San Francisco at the age of 86.
He was the cherished husband of Margo Fields, son of the late George and Bertha Fleischman, and brother of the late Laura Mae Cassel (and the late Dr. Melvin Cassel). He leaves behind a legacy as an adored uncle.
Born on July 22, 1934, in St. Louis, Gary grew up in a University City apartment building where he was affectionately known as "Sonny" to his aunts, uncles, and first cousins. The close-knit environment, with each apartment occupied by a sibling of Gary's parents, fostered bonds that Gary often likened to those of siblings rather than cousins.
In 1945, George and Bertha relocated to Clayton, where Gary attended Clayton High School and St. Louis Country Day School before pursuing higher education at Harvard University and the Stanford University School of Law.
Following his tenure as an Assistant United States Attorney in Los Angeles during the early 1960s, Gary embarked on a distinguished career in private law practice. His focus encompassed civil litigation, criminal defense, and civil rights, including notable representation of Linda Kasabian, a key witness in the Charles Manson trial of 1970. Additionally, Gary achieved success in litigation against General Motors for wrongful termination of a black employee.
Beyond his legal career, Gary was an ardent golfer, honing his skills from a young age at Ruth Park in University City and Forest Park in St. Louis. He also shared a passion for snow skiing with Margo, continuing their adventures well into his early 80s in Utah and Lake Tahoe.
Kasabian died in Tacoma on January 21, 2023, at the age of 73.
